The short story “Troll Bridge” by Neil Gaiman is rather dense, relying heavily on descriptive passages of the setting. This also makes its language more complex, yet easy to understand, with typical English vocabulary.

The choice of words mainly reflects the narrator’s perspective at different stages of his life. Positive words like “freedom” or “fairyland”  are present when the narrator presents childhood moments, and more serious, negative words like “empty and cold” or “sobbing”  are used closer to the end, when the narrator is disappointed with life and himself.
