The short story “The Third and Final Continent” by Jhumpa Lahiri begins with the narrator presenting his journey to three continents. The narrator leaves India and moves to London, where he is a student at London School of Economics. While in London, the narrator shares a house with other Bengali men and works at the university library. Six years later, he returns to India, where he has an arranged marriage with a young woman named Mala. Around that time, he is offered a job in America, in an M.I.T. library, and he chooses to accept it. 

The narrator travels to America and tries to get accustomed to American customs. He spends some time at the Y.M.C.A., while also trying to adjust to a modest lifestyle. The narrator then discovers an advertisement in a newspaper, and he decides to leave the accommodation at Y.M.C.A. and rent a room from an elderly woman, Mrs. Croft.
