Jube Benson
Jube Benson is also a main character of the short story “The Lynching of Jube Benson” by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Jube Benson is “the black man of all work about” the house where Dr. Melville has set up his medical practice, which means that he does all sorts of work. He also has a girlfriend named Lucy.
Jube Benson’s inner characterization reveals that he feels affection towards Annie: “White and black who knew her loved her, and none, I thought, more deeply and respectfully than Jube Benson, the black man of all work about the place”. He seems to do anything Annie asks him, and he is deeply distressed when he finds out she was murdered.
After he realizes that Dr. Melville is in love with Annie, Jube Benson also transfers his affection towards him....
