Truth vs. lies

Throughout Raymond Carver’s short story “The Lie” there is an obvious uncertainty about what the reader should regard as truth or lie. This confusion starts from the title, since it is assumed that the story will present a lie. It may also show that the story will have as its main focus figuring out a certain truth. However, by the end, there is still no solution and the reader does not find out what the lie was, or if it was a lie. This feeling is stressed by both the narrator and his wife, who often deceive the reader. The narrator is confused and does not know what to believe, while the wife manipulates him and rejects what was said about her. However, she then admits to having lied, but at the end says once again that it was not true....
