Narrator and point of view

The short story “The Grass-Eaters” by Krishnan Varma is told from the point of view of a first-person narrator, who is also the main character, Ajit. He thinks about the places he and his wife have lived in. 

The first-person narration allows the reader to know how he feels from his first-hand account and comments. Because of this, although he claims to be grateful and content with his life, the way the narrator relates the past events gives the story an ironic tone. For example, the narrator presents a chaotic and worrying picture but refers to it as something he watches contently: “We live very quietly, content to look at the passing scene: a tram burning, a man stabbing another man, a woman dropping her baby in a garbage bin”.
