In what follows, we will discuss the setting of the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe.
The story takes place somewhere in Italy during springtime, fifty years before its narration. However, no exact city or year are mentioned, so we can assume that the time of the narrative is contemporary with the date of publication, 1846. If so, then the main events happened one night, sometimes at the end of the eighteenth century.
The social setting of the story is not important as the author’s intention was to render the psychology of the killer-narrator. However, the names and the references to wealth and rare wines indicate that the main characters belong to the Italian nobility.
