The short story “Mr. Mumsford” by Larry French begins with a short introduction about Bibs. The first line of the story already creates the expectation that Bibs intends to murder someone: “Bibs, the janitor, had never killed a man before” (l. 1). We also learn about Bibs’ history, how long he has been working in the school, and how everyone only knows him by his nickname. This is explicitly presented as the reason for the crime he intends to commit: “This was the reason he had come, to kill the principal who was working late in his office down the hall” (ll.8-10). This sentence is also the link that connects the introduction with the main part of the story, in which Bibs confronts the principal.
