Summary

The first-person female narrator of “Loose Change” by Andrea Levy describes herself as a typically unsociable Londoner. However, one day she meets a young girl from Uzbekistan in the bathroom of the National Portrait Gallery. The girl is the only one who offers the narrator change so that she could buy some tampons. Before the woman can give the girl a banknote in exchange, the girl leaves the bathroom. She finds the girl, Laylor, looking at a painting depicting Darcy Bussell. The two talk about the portrait and the narrator decides to show her a few other paintings which she believes are better.

The narrator offers to buy Laylor a cup of tea in return for the coins she gave her. As they have tea, the narrator finds out she is from Uzbekistan....
