Narrator and point of view

The short story “Loose Change” by Andrea Levy is a first-person narration told by a female character. As the narrator recounts events that concern her, the story is only told from her point of view.

The narrator’s point of view is subjective and biased. Her story about the encounter with Laylor is clearly influenced by prejudice: “She had sought me out - sifted me from the crowd. This young woman was desperate for help. She'd even cunningly made me obliged to her.” 

Consequently, the narrator is not reliable. Her comments on Laylor and her brother are ironical, mocking, and often prejudiced: “She had wide black eyes and a round face with such a solid jaw line that she looked to have taken a gentle whack from Tom and Jerry's cartoon frying pan...
