The short story is about romantic love and the inner struggle between respecting tradition (represented by marriage) and following one’s heart. This theme is mostly illustrated through the female character, Catharine, who is faced with an unexpected decision. The woman is about to be married to a man she assumes she loves, when her childhood friend, Newt declares his love. From this point onwards, we see Catharine struggling because she is afraid to admit that she also loves Newt.
