Setting

The story “Long Walk to Forever” by Kurt Vonnegut is set in a town in America and was probably meant to be read as a contemporary one (the 1960s), even though there is no reference to the exact time.

Physical setting

The physical setting is comprised of the front door of Catharine’s house and the woods in which the two characters stroll “through leaves, over bridges”. This suggests that the action may take place during autumn, yet we cannot tell for sure. Important elements of the setting are the trees and the bell chimes, which set the story in a romantic atmosphere:

"The shadows of the apple trees grew to the east. The bells in the tower of the school for the blind rang again. "chick-a-dee-dee-dee," went a chickadee. Somewhere far away an automobile started nagged and failed, nagged and failed, fell still."
