“Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway tells the story of an American man and a girl nicknamed Jig who are at a train station in Spain, somewhere close to the Ebro River. They are waiting for an express train from Barcelona to Madrid at the station bar. They order beers and local drinks, while the girl comments on the view with white hills that look like elephants. The man disagrees with her perspective on the hills and seems to have a more rational perspective.

The conversation becomes increasingly tense. The man insists that the girl should have an operation, while the girl seems less certain about it. The man keeps reassuring her that the operation is safe and simple. They continue drinking and the girl decides that the white hills ...
