Literary context

F Scott Fitzgerald was writing “The Great Gatsby” at a time when Modernism was the main literary form. The 1920s was an era which produced many well-known American authors, including Fitzgerald himself, his wife Zelda (who was also a talented author), Sinclair Lewis,  Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein.

Like authors such as Hemingway and Stein, Fitzgerald's form of modernism involved exploring the “modern condition” of the human being, or what it meant to be alive in the modern age.
