The speaker of the Chicken Tikka Masala speech is British politician Robin Cook, who passed away in 2005. When he delivered the speech he was still Foreign Secretary in Tony Blair’s Labour Cabinet.

The Labour Party is one of the main historical parties in the country with a centre-left orientation (towards social policies). The Labour Party was in power from 1997 to 2010 under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

As a Labour Foreign Secretary, Cook was known to be pro-European and made several promises about adding an ethical dimension to his mandate. However, by the time of the speech his credibility had been affected by controversial UK interventions in Kosovo and Sierra Leone.
