In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, people are under constant influence and surveillance. They have to obey many rules: their place in society is already determined when they are conceived in the test tube. The citizens of the World State are conditioned to be content and not to ask questions. They also know that expressing your own opinions or behaving differently can be dangerous.

Here are a few examples: Fanny warns Lenina because of her connection to Henry Foster: “ ‘It's such horribly bad form to go on and on like this with one man’ ” and “ ‘no, it really won't do. And you know how strongly the D.H.C. objects to anything intense or long-drawn.’ ” (Chapter 3, 40%).
