Aging and death

In Chapter 3 of Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World, Mustapha Mond explains that aging has been eliminated: “ ‘All the physiological stigmata of old age have been abolished. And along with them, of course … Along with them all the old man's mental peculiarities. Characters remain constant throughout a whole lifetime.’ ” (Chapter 3, 93%). The World State does not allow people to look their age. “ ‘That's because we don't allow them to be like that. We preserve them from diseases. We keep their internal secretions artificially balanced at a youthful equilibrium. We don't permit their magnesium-calcium ratio to fall below what it was at thirty. We give them a transfusion of young blood. We keep their metabolism permanently stimulated.’ ” (Chapter 7, 22%).
