Debate

Chapters 16 and 17 of Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World focus on the ideological debate between John and Mustapha Mond, the World Controller. They argue about state theory, art, religion, and science. The debate is characterized by the rapid change of views and arguments between the two parties. Mustapha Mond has the advantage of having a good command of the rhetoric and therefore always finds new ways to refute John's objections. John often quotes Shakespeare. The poet thus forms a kind of basic reference for the philosophical conversation between the two, who have in-depth knowledge of his works.
