Textual perspective

When analyzing the speech, we encourage you to look at other speeches by Barack Obama during the electoral campaign, such as Barack Obama's announcement speech from 2007. If you compare the two speeches you will notice that they share the same optimistic message that unity can be achieved in American society, as well as similar structure and language techniques.

In both speeches, Barack Obama begins by talking about himself, uses the personal pronoun ‘we’, appeals predominantly to ethos and makes use of rhetorical devices like allusions and enumerations.

Additionally, you should also try and compare the speech with speeches by different speakers, so that you gain a broader view of rhetorical styles.
