Helped by a Muslim Hausa woman, Chika (who is Christian and Igbo) hides in an abandoned store during street riots between the Hausa and the Igbo in Kano. The riots started because an Igbo Christian drove over a Quran book on the street. In the store, Chika analyses the Muslim woman and reflects on their different social status. Chika is educated and comes from a wealthy family while the woman is poor and uneducated, selling onions in the market.

As the two of them talk Chika tells the woman that she was in the market with her sister Nnedi, but she lost track of her when the riots started. The Muslim woman tells her that her older daughter was also in the market, but she lost...
