Ngugi wa Thiong’o, born James Ngugi (1938-) is a Kenyan teacher, novelist, essayist, and playwright. He was imprisoned by the authoritarian Kenyan regime because of the political message in his writings. His debut novel – Weep Not, Child - published in 1964, is the first novel in English to be published by a writer from East Africa. After his imprisonment, he abandoned using English as the primary language of his work preferring to write in his native language, Kikuyu.
